The
Respiratory System Protocols The respiratory system consists primarily of the nasal passages, sinuses, main bronchi, bronchioles and the lungs themselves. The conditions affecting the respiratory system that may benefit from the use of the herbal remedies fall into two main categories: inflammation or infective. Within this we also include allergies, since although the approach is slightly different, the end result is still one of inflammation. Thus, the common conditions seen by the practitioner of herbal medicine are asthma, sinusitis, acute and chronic bronchitis, hay fever and related allergy problems. Asthma: Asthma is primarily a condition of inflammation which results in swelling of the tissues in the airways, thickening of the mucus which protects the airways and the classic asthma attack, caused by spasm of the smooth muscle which supports the airways. These effects are caused by the various mediators of inflammation that are released when a substance recognized as foreign by the body (an antigen) stimulates the immune system. Both the mediators of inflammation and the antigen cause damage to the epithelial lining of the airways making them even more sensitive to stimulation and creating a vicious cycle of more inflammation and more hypersensitivity. Asthma is on the increase in all industrialized nations throughout the world, reaching epidemic proportions. Almost 10% of young Americans now carry the diagnosis of “Asthmatic”. Factors Affecting Asthma: - Pollution, including pesticides, factory pollution and pa10’s from exhaust fumes are all on the increase, interestingly in direct correlation with the increased incidence of asthma - Occupational factors play an important role. Those working in mines, bakeries, print shops or on farms or construction sites are all at a significantly increased risk of asthma. The fine dust particles that sit on the lungs and are difficult for the body to remove - Viral infections lead to hypersensitivity of the respiratory tract for months following recovery from the infection. Sinusitis and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract lead to post nasal drip which sets up inflammation in the airways. Reflux disease (heartburn) also leads to constriction of the airway muscles due to nervous reflex -
Smoking increases the risk of
asthma by over 50%! -
The last but by no means least
significant factor is diet.
Foods containing sulfites and nitrites
(mostly canned and processed foods) aggravate
asthma. Other
colorings and preservatives such as tartrazine,
EDTA derivatives, benzoic acid, and acetic acid
can all directly cause asthmatic attacks.
