The Gastro-Intestinal System

When dealing with the Gastro-intestinal system, the problems affecting it may primarily be divided into just a few categories.

 *Inflammatory                                     *Spasmodic

*Functional                                          *Infective

Conditions carrying different diagnoses are often approached in a similar way herbally so you will see some crossover in the herbs when maintaining a healthy digestive tract

Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease:

GERD is caused by the acid from the stomach rising up into the esophagus, thus inflaming the relatively unprotected lining causing that painful burning sensation.  Long term, untreated heartburn can increase the risk of cancer of the esophagus.

Factors Affecting G.E.R.D.:

-         Poor diet and eating late at night

-         Age

-         Many drugs lower sphincter tone and lead to reflux

Symptoms and Signs of G.E.R.D.:

-         Burning sensation in the chest especially after eating or when bending forward or lying down

-         Hot, sour tasting fluid regurgitating into the back of the throat

Aims of Herbal Support Therapies:

-         To reduce acid production in the stomach

-         To provide a coating to protect the esophageal lining

-         To reduce inflammation in the esophagus

-         To gently astringe the lining of the esophagus
