The
Nervous System Protocols The nervous system affects virtually every operation performed by the body from the movement of skeletal and smooth muscle, to regulating heart rate. The nervous system interacts closely with the endocrine system. The chronic over stimulation of these two systems leads to the symptoms of stress. The nervous system provides a direct interface between the internal and external environments. Herbal practitioners use the close relationship and interplay of the nervous and endocrine systems when dealing with nerve-related conditions. Headaches: Headaches are one of the most common pain related problems experienced by the American public. Occasionally headaches are a symptom of serious underlying disease, however, most headaches are benign. Recurrent, severe headaches should be investigated by your health care practitioner. The approach to tension and migraine headaches is very different. We will discuss the two separately. An imbalance in neurotransmitters leads to the constriction of the arteries in the brain leading to the constriction of the arteries in the brain leading to decreased blood flow to a particular area. This is what is considered to cause the “aura” often associated with migraine. The further release of inflammatory compounds then causes dilation of the arteries. The local inflammation is believed to be the cause of the pain. Factors Affecting Migraines: -Stress -Dietary triggers -Increased platelet instability Aims of Herbal Support Therapies: - To stabilize platelets - To reduce the level of inflammatory mediators produced - To prevent or reverse the vasodilatation, hence reducing pain Headache Ease Protocol: 1.
